BBG Digest - Death of the Author

A new solo tarot game of character agency and authorial intent

BBG Digest - Death of the Author

Hi all! I’m excited to say that Death of the Author, my new solo tarot TTRPG, is coming to Backerkit on May 14th!

The cover art for Death of the Author, drawn by Victor Winter. Shows a person pulling themselves out of a page on a typewriter, reaching towards the sky. The person appears to be fading into the page.

Death of the Author is about a Character fighting for agency in their story, against the wishes of their Author. The player creates a Character, who tries to wrest narrative control from the Author. At the end, no matter the story, the Character confronts their Author.

This game is a hack of my first solo tarot game, Anamnesis, with some twists to the original mechanics. One large difference is that the Character can change the prompts to gain more control over their narrative.

This game is crowdfunding on Backerkit from May 14 to May 28. It’s my first Backerkit project - while projects on Backerkit do not get as much traction as those on Kickstarter, Backerkit does a better job communicating with indie creators and has a stronger and more ethical stance on the use of AI-generated content in projects. I feel good about the swap, and I hope those of you from the Anamnesis Kickstarter campaign will join me on this new platform!

You can follow the pre-lauch page to be notified when the campaign launches.

Other Backerkit Projects

There are two other Backerkit projects by fantastic indie creators that are also launching on May 14th!

Part of the cover art for Little Wolves. Depicts a green bipedal wolf with orange eyes, hunched over. A bird-like woman is in profile in the corner above the wolf. The title is in an orange font against a red circle

Little Wolves by Dinoberry Press is a game of “folktales, werewolves, and fae queens.” Players create and decorate a mask during this game, which they wear & remove depending on whether their character is in wolf or human form.

The title NEST in all caps against an orange background. To the right is a large robot that resembles a shelled, four-legged animal

NEST by Gila RPGs is a LUMEN game, set in the world of NOVA. Players accomplish missions as Corvus Dominion agents fighting against a Hellion warlord.

The works of Dinoberry Press and Gila RPGs are highly influential to me, as they helped first introduce me to indie TTRPGs. I’m excited to be launch buddies with them!

Outliers Pre-Order

The Kickstarter banner for Outliers, which shows the title with the text "A solo journaling role-playing game by Samantha Leigh". Below the text is a drawing of a binder and a couple pages. To the right is a funky computer. A banner at the bottom reads "Funded in 6.58 microcenturies!

Huge thank you to everyone who supported the Outliers campaign!

If you missed the campaign, Outliers is currently available to pre-order. I just got my copy in the mail (along with the stickers!) and I could not be more delighted with how it turned out. Excited for it to be in people’s hands!

That’s all for now! I’m keeping this update short as I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me over the next couple weeks. Hope you’re all having a wonderful spring!
